Project Background
To meet growing domestic energy demands and optimize industrial power generation, Oman initiated a comprehensive modernization of its National Natural Gas Network. The upgrade focused on replacing aging infrastructure and expanding the capacity of main high-pressure gas corridors across the country. Given the immense volume of gas being transported, the project required robust, large-diameter transmission lines capable of operating under high pressures and resisting regional soil stresses. Allland Pipe successfully secured the manufacturing contract, providing high-performance API 5L X65M PSL2 steel line pipes to serve as a critical backbone for this national energy grid expansion.
Client Challenge
- High-Pressure Large-Diameter Demands: Operating a main gas artery requires a flawless balance of large volume and high pressure. The 914mm outer diameter combined with an 18mm wall thickness requires premium steel plates and precise forming parameters to ensure maximum structural strength.
- Strict Thermomechanical Rolling Specifications: The X65M grade (M indicating thermomechanical rolling) requires exact microalloying and heat control during production. This ensures excellent low-temperature fracture toughness and superior field weldability, minimizing localized stress concentrations during installation.
- Rigorous Cross-Border Delivery Schedule: As part of a national grid renovation, construction timelines were highly synchronized. Pipeline manufacturing, third-party technical inspection, and sea-freight logistics to Omani ports had to run like clockwork to avoid field mobilization delays.
Our Solution and Results
- Advanced LSAW Production and Control: Utilizing Allland’s modern LSAW processing facilities, we formed and submerged-arc welded the heavy 914mm pipes. The welding heat input was closely monitored via automated controls to ensure the mechanical properties of the weld seam matched the base metal perfectly.
- Flawless Quality Control System: Every individual pipe joint underwent 100% full-body non-destructive testing (NDT), including automated ultrasonic testing (UT) and digital X-ray inspection of the weld seams. Hydrostatic tests were conducted at pressures exceeding maximum field operating parameters to guarantee ultimate long-term reliability.
- Efficient Logistics and Protective Packaging: Our experienced supply chain team optimized the maritime shipping schedules. To protect the precision-machined pipe bevels during transit, heavy-duty protective end caps were installed, and specialized loading configurations were used to ensure the cargo arrived in Oman in pristine condition.
Project Outcomes
